Shopify SEO Checklist: On-Page Optimisation for Product Pages

3 February 2026 7 min read

Getting your Shopify product pages right for search engines is a systematic process. This checklist covers everything you need to optimise, in order of impact, so you can work through it methodically.

Title Tags

Your title tag is the single most important on-page ranking factor. For product pages:

  • Include the primary keyword naturally (usually the product name + type)
  • Keep it under 60 characters to avoid truncation in search results
  • Add a differentiator — price, key feature, or brand name
  • Avoid keyword stuffing — write for humans first

Good: "Merino Wool Running Socks — Cushioned, Anti-Blister | BrandName"

Bad: "Socks Running Socks Wool Socks Best Socks Buy Socks"

Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions don't directly affect rankings but dramatically impact click-through rates. Write compelling 150-160 character descriptions that include your target keyword, highlight a benefit, and include a call to action. Shopify auto-generates these from product descriptions if you leave them blank — never leave them blank.

URL Handles

Set clean, keyword-rich URL handles when creating products. Shopify auto-generates these from the product title, but review and clean them up:

  • Remove filler words (a, the, and, with)
  • Keep it concise — 3-5 words maximum
  • Use hyphens as separators (Shopify does this automatically)
  • Never change a URL handle after the page is indexed without setting up a 301 redirect
Pro Tip: Create a bulk SEO template for product titles and meta descriptions. For example: "[Product Name] — [Key Feature] | [Brand]" for titles and "[Benefit statement]. [Feature]. [Social proof]. Shop now with free UK delivery." for descriptions. This ensures consistency across hundreds of products.

Product Descriptions

Write unique descriptions for every product. Copying manufacturer descriptions creates duplicate content across every retailer selling the same product. Aim for at least 200 words covering:

  • What the product is and who it's for
  • Key features and specifications
  • Benefits (not just features — tell customers why it matters)
  • Use cases or occasions
  • Care instructions or compatibility information

Image Optimisation

Product images need descriptive alt text — not "IMG_4521.jpg" but "Navy merino wool running socks — cushioned sole, ankle length". Alt text helps Google understand your images and drives traffic through Google Image Search. Also ensure images are compressed (WebP format ideally) and appropriately sized.

Internal Linking

Link related products within descriptions. If someone is looking at running socks, link to running shoes and sports accessories. This distributes page authority and helps Google understand your product relationships. Collection pages should link to their top products, and product pages should link back to relevant collections.

Structured Data

Ensure your theme outputs correct Product schema including name, description, image, price, currency, availability, brand, and aggregate ratings. Use Google's Rich Results Test to verify. Rich snippets with star ratings and prices significantly improve click-through rates from search results.

Collection Page Optimisation

Don't neglect collection pages — they often rank for broader category terms. Add unique introductory text (at least 100 words), optimise the title and meta description, and ensure the H1 matches the target keyword. Use Shopify's collection sorting to show best-sellers first.

FAQ

Should I add SEO text below products on collection pages?

Yes, but keep it genuinely helpful — a brief overview of the category, buying considerations, and what differentiates your products. Avoid keyword-stuffed paragraphs that provide no value. 100-200 words is usually sufficient. Some stores place this content below the product grid.

How often should I audit my product page SEO?

Quarterly is a good cadence for established stores. New stores should optimise every product at creation. Use Screaming Frog or a Shopify SEO app to bulk-audit title tags, meta descriptions, alt text, and broken links.

Do product tags affect SEO on Shopify?

Product tags create filterable URLs (/collections/all/tag-name) that are indexed by default. This can create thin content pages. Either add canonical tags to these filtered pages or use robots.txt/meta robots to prevent indexing of tag-filtered URLs.
